GHANAINS TRYING TO GRAPPLE WITH THE EFFECTS OF POOR ELECTRICITY

By Peter Roc
In Accra

From all indications Ghanains need to learn a lot from Nigerians when it comes to the issue of poor electricity supply. I am at Accra presently and the power situation is so bad that there could be outage for about 2 days at a stretch. The hotel am staying now rations power for the evenings! Some hotels are yet to come to terms with the power situation so they hardly make provisions for power outage.
The funniest part is that a lot of businesses are yet to understand that they need to have generators. I was at a cyber café today and they told me power was off, no provisions for generator. I know those ones will soon pack up business.
The impact of the influx of people and businesses into Ghana is very evident in the increase in both vehicular and human traffic in the capital Accra and of course this has weighed heavily on the country’s electricity.
